More and more often 3rd wave coffee is making itself known in mainstream media.
Just recently although filmed 4 months ago ABC Nightline did a story on
coffee’s 3rd wave featuring Stumptown and Bluebottle.
Very awesome.
15 minutes, 12 drinks.
2010 World Barista Champion Michael Phillips.
Watch this video and see exactly what it takes to be a World Barista Champion.
Earlier this year Music City’s baristas and coffee enthusiasts alike
gathered together for an evening of friendly latte art competiton, coffee tasting
and coffee trivia. Hosted by Ugly Mugs cafe in East Nashville baristas were given one latte pour in grueling head to head competition to claim the title of Nashville’s 3rd ever latte art champion. Assuming the title of champion was Jamie Cunningham the now head barista for Bongo Java Coffee in Nashville, he was closely followed by Jackson O’Brien a fellow Bongo employee who manages Bongo Java’s Belmont locations baristas. Graciously the events sponsors Dose Coffee, Crema, and Ugly Mugs all donated an assortment of Barista Magazine subscriptions, an aeropress, gift certificates and t-shirts. Nashville’s newest coffee venture Beve Mobile Coffee was also present setting up their bar for tasting and demonstration with Atlanta’s Batdorf & Bronson Coffee’s Jason Dominy.
This event was not only celebrated by Nashville coffee community but was recognized nationally in Barista Magazine. Heath Henley co-owner of Dose Coffee & Tea periodically writes from Barista Magazine and covered the event giving voice to the growing coffee community here in Music City.

It’s My Way or the Norway: Coffees from the Land of the Midnight Sun
WHERE: MST Coffee Roasters
3 Cannery Row, Suite 103
(1st floor below Mercy Lounge)
Nashville, TN
A little bit of late notice, I know, but I just got back from Oslo last night.
This tasting will feature coffees roasted in Norway – and maybe one from Iceland as well. I smuggled them in a shoulder bag specifically for this purpose…
The interesting thing here is to see how roast profiles and tastes are different in other regions of the world. Generally speaking, Scandinavian roasters keep their coffees lighter than their American counterparts – something that the “3rd Wave” of coffee in the US has begun to emulate more and more in the past 5 years or so. The result? Well, come find out! (And come see MST Coffee Roasters awesome diggs! They even have a REAL cupping table!!)
As always, I aim to keep it informal: anyone is welcome, you don’t have to stay for the whole things, and it’s completely free.

Our next cupping is coming up soon! Join us Sunday August 23rd at Ugly Mugs Coffee & Tea in East Nashville to taste coffees from three Tennessee roasters. We’ve know that there will be coffee there from Vienna Coffee Company in Maryville, TN as well as Stone Cup Roasting Co. in Chattanooga.
Those two companies alone are enough reason to come out! I’ve met the respective owners/roastmasters from both companies at industry events and can tell you they are both very quality focused companies with an attention to detail.
As always, the cupping is free, no experience is necessary, and if we have beans left over you’re welcome to take some home to share with the family…or dog…or kids… well, maybe not the kids. I’ve tried that and while it was fun for the first twenty minutes or so, experiencing a 2 year old go through a caffeine-crash is painful. But I digress.
More info soon on these upcoming events:
